Bhartiya Majdoor Sangh lauds relaxation of Labour Laws New Delhi, May 28 (KNN) Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh has appreciated the bold stand taken by the central government on the issues related to labour. Some states had taken ordinance route to attract investments by exempting new establishments from all labour laws but some for three years.
The union said it is also happy to note that states like UP and Rajasthan have withdrawn the earlier notified work shift of 12 hours as against 8 hours and have urged other states to follow suit.
“Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) places on record its appreciation on the bold stand taken by the central government on the issues related to labour which were raised by the BMS through countrywide protest,” BMS general secretary Vrijesh Upadhaya said in a statement.
Citing the latest statement of labour minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar on the suspension of labour laws by states like UP, MP and Gujarat, BMS said, “this has exposed the blunder of ordinance route adopted by these states and a clear direction that it is time to withdraw the ordinances,” BMS said.
Commenting on the trend of increasing working hours from eight hours to twelve hours, first started by the government of Rajasthan and later followed by others, BMS said, “now the reverse trend of ‘correcting the mistake’ has started with first UP government reverting back to 8 hours followed by Rajasthan government”. “BMS demands other state governments also to follow it,” it said.
According to BMS, India should not discard its noble tradition of social dialogue and governments should not be shy of talking to trade unions. “Every change in labour laws should be made only by consulting with trade unions,” it said cautioning that the BMS will continue to use all democratic means to persuade governments to address the concerns raised by it.
Welcoming the setting up of a migrant commission by the UP government, BMS said looking at the general attitude of the policy advisors in the government it is felt that without trade union representatives it will remain an exercise merely to supply cheap labour to industries.
“The state government needs to redraft the terms of reference to include dignified treatment to migrant labours,” it added.
